Update from Tucker’s Foster Mom: I picked up Tucker from Jabula’s farm yesterday and immediately I could tell he is one big bucket of love! The moment I met him, he sat at my feet with his head held up and a huge smile, waiting to be scratched. The moment I started in on his ears he feel to the ground for a belly rub. He LOVES to have his belly rubbed. He always seems to be smiling. It is clear that Jabula’s training has been successful. He sits, stays, waits for me at the door to go out, comes when I call, goes into his crate at night without hesitation, and stays out of the kitchen when I eat for the most part. I think it would be hard for anyone to stay away from a big bag of cheese! We were unsure whether or not he would go to the bathroom in the house, but so far so good. He has only gone outside! He likes to walk around the house sniffing everything new, then finds the perfect place to take a rest. He is also getting along great with my female black lab. For the most part they stay out of each others way. There have been a few occasions however where they start to play. It does not last long, but it is clear to tell he would be great with another low key dog or by himself. When I work in the office he finds his bed to take a nap or lays at my feet. Tucker is a puppy at heart, but does not seem to be one that will need constant exercise. He does not have the best back leg and will at times take a break when he feels the need.  Tucker will make a great companion to a family or someone who is searching for a buddy to have around. He is a big teddy bear and a great dog!

Tucker is a 2 year old male black lab who has had a tough life so far. He was found, abandoned, on a farm, while he was trying to join in on the wedding of one of our volunteers. After watching this sweet boy flop at everyone’s feet for a belly rub and seeing an injury, they couldn’t leave him behind! He was covered in fleas and ticks and has an old scar and an old fracture to his back left leg that was never treated, likely from being caught in a trap or in a fence.  Since being rescued, Tucker is now all fixed up and ready for his forever home. He has had two weeks of professional training with Jabula Dog Academy to help him be someone’s perfect dog. He loves to cuddle, bellyrubs, chasing squirrels, and just to be by your side. Can you give this big, beautiful boy a second chance on a great life?

Diamond Pet Foods is expanding a voluntary recall to include Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food. The company took this precautionary measure because sampling revealed Salmonella in the product. No dog illnesses have been reported.

Penny is one of our “Film Directors” puppies (you get to guess which director). She is around 5 months old and super cute. She gets along great with other dogs. While she was a little shy at first she is quickly learning that snuggling feels really nice. If you are looking us on Facebook (if you are not like us), this is one of the 10 puppies from South Georgia.  Penny is ready for a new home where her training on snuggling will be continue for the rest of her life.

Black cats and dogs everywhere are donning their dark glasses and engaging their “flashy things” to wipe out the myths and stereotypes about black animals during Back in Black 2, a national adoption promotion.

Supported by national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society^®, about 100 animal rescue groups and shelters across the country including Labrador Friends of the South in Georgia are participating. Last year, the Back in Black adoption event was introduced to showcase black dogs and cats and give them the best chance at being adopted. More than 900 pets found homes nationwide.

This year, Agent D (Dog) at Labrador Friends of the South and the rest their furry super agents are ready to show off their personalities and dashing good looks to prospective adopters during “Back in Black 2” adoption promotion.

Labrador Friends of the South is holding a “Back in Black,” promotion between May 1 and May 31 to highlight adorable, adoptable black Labrador retrievers.

Adoption Fees For Our Black Labbies are $225 (normally $275)

 City Dog Market has 200 “Black Ribbon Black Dogs Rule” cookies for BIB2 and they are selling them for $3-all of the money goes to Lab Friends (we have in store signage on this so please send all Lab Friends lovers over!).

Meet Bowie! This super adorable chocolate puppy is around 9 weeks old. She loves to cuddle and snuggle; who wouldn’t want to snuggle with such a cutie?! Bowie would do good in a home with another dog to keep her company. She is currently learning the ropes of life in a home. Little Sofia is one of our “Film Directors” puppies (you get to guess which director). She is around 5 months old and super cute. She is in foster home doing great. She was a little shy at first but within a couple of days she has already relaxed a lot. Here is what foster mom says about Sofia :

Sofia is very sweet and loving. She has come out of her shell and is a playful puppy. Sofia is actually pretty laid back and easy to care for. We watched a movie yesterday and laid beside me. We are mastering “sit” and are working on other commands. She LOVES to play fetch. Sofia is doing excellent on potty training. She is getting along great with my dog. I will let you know later in the week how the introduction to my cats go.. So far she doesn’t seem too interested when she has seen them through the glass door. Sofia will be a great addition to anyone’s family.

He never even made it to the website. Antonio, Karen and Brody fell in love with him… Brody and Leo look great together.  He is now called Saban.

Leo was in an extremely high kill shelter in Elba, AL. A friend of the shelters is working down there as a police officer and he wanted us to see if we could possible help save some of them so info is going to be limited.

Meet Mr. Orbit. He is the latest arrival to LFS. He is a super super sweet 3-4 year old yellow lab. We don’t know what his past life was but he cannot have been that easy. He was so dirty that one bath was not enough. He currently weighs 56 pounds but he should really be 76. So off on a high calories diet he is (I so wish my doctor would prescribe this to me!). He has a skin infection and, of course, he is strong HW+. This said, he is on medications for the skin, we will neuter him as soon as he has put some weight on and after that we will start his HW treatment. It will take a couple weeks before he will be ready to go into a foster or permanent home but don’t let his issues confuse you: not many dogs have his personality. He is incredible!
