Meet Candy!  She is a very sweet, smart and always smiling girl. She is quickly picking up on my directions. Since she is recovering from being spayed I haven’t been able to play much with her outside but she walks really great on a leash. She does get excited when other people or dogs come around and starts to pull on the leash so we’re working on that. And she still needs some help getting house trained but she is crate trained. She loves other dogs as far as I can tell. I’ll know for sure once she can play at the dog park. She seems to also love kids but I don’t know how she is around cats. She loves to lay by my side with her head in my lap while I’m watching TV. Oh, and she rides in the car perfectly.

Meet Gracie – a petite little 8 month old girl at 34 pounds & she won’t get much bigger. She may be mixed with Brittany spaniel, she has a little feathering on her tail & legs. She’s a dark chocolate color with lighter highlights & her picture doesn’t do her justice! She was rescued by a college student who realized he didn’t have the time or place for her. Gracie loves people, kids & other dogs. She is housetrained & isn’t a barker. She’s not much of a chewer either, although we still crate her when we leave the house. She sleeps in the bedroom at night though & isn’t destructive then. She loves to play but settles down quickly inside. This is a dog that will do well in almost any situation where she receives love, attention & exercise. She is a very gentle soul with a sweet personality. If you’re looking for a lab personality in a smaller package, Gracie is your girl!

Meet Divot and Cody! These 2 stellar lab mixes were adopted from us a few years ago, but unfortunate circumstances have brought them back to LFS. Cody is a bit fluffier than a regular lab, and has a tail that seems to have been docked when he was a puppy for some reason, but he has a labby personality nonetheless! Divot looks more like a lab of the two, and is a bit smaller. They are both around 4.5 years old. They can go to a home together or separate, but would probably do best with another dog.

UPDATE FROM THE FOSTER DAD: In terms of personality and likes/dislikes, Divot is energetic, incredibly sweet, loves people, and loves playing with Cody.  He is a typical lab: quite eager to please. Cody is the larger of the two; he is also very sweet yet less energetic than Divot, and is protective of his space without being aggressive. (He will bark at strangers on his property.) They both like people very much, and like any Lab, love time and attention. Cody and Divot like to play with each other and are happy to be outside as well; happy period, actually. They are also fairly well trained with basic commands.

The dogs are just typical labs. Worst case scenario is they might lick someone to death

Meet Tony. He is a big handsome boy. He is 5 and half years old and 108 pounds… Did we say he is big?! Tony was turned in to us by his owner who, after having him since puppy, could not take him along to his seniors facility home. We promised Tony’s owner that we would find a great home for him so help us find him the perfect family. Tony is big and a little stubborn ( he likes to pretend he did not hear you) and would do better with a stern owner. He is also very sweet so don’t let his size convince you otherwise.

Meet Henry. We estimate him between 1 and 2 but I will have a better guess next week when our vet sees him. He is super sweet. Gets along with other dogs, rides well in the car and adores people. He knows sit, down, shake and loves to fetch. He is gorgeous and strong. He needs some work on the leash but he was responding well to my corrections so I think he was trained in the past and he will remember quickly!

Give something special and sweet for Valentine to someone you love. Sponsor one of the cereal puppies for them. Pick a puppy, donate $25 to sponsor your puppy and tell us who to send the note stating that a sweet puppy is being sponsored in their name for Valentine’s day. This present will be a sweet as chocolate but better for their waste line… Plus it will warm their heart.  

The reality of shelter dogs is very hard: Any of us who has gone to pick up a dog from a shelter knows all too well how hard is to leave with only the dog you are schedule to pick up. Should we ignore it because it is too hard to watch? Can a love for the qualities and beauty of each breed coexist with a rescue philosophy? We all love a beautiful looking dog, yet is a good looking dog the right fit for your family? What defines beauty?  Is a funny personality more important than beauty? How can we keep our shelter dog happy and how do they make us happy?

With this blog I am starting a new adventure and I hope to tackle some of these questions and many more, without forgetting to post funny stories from our dogs, dog tips and many ideas to keep your dog and your heart happy. I hope you can stay and join me in this adventure.
