I will never understand how people can do some of the awful things that they do. This is Piper. Piper is a beautiful, amazing girl who we just rescued along with her four 5 week old puppies. As you can see from the pictures, Piper is extremely emaciated. It’s a wonder she was able to feed her puppies at all anymore. She gave everything she had to her babies, even though it took everything from her. To add to her struggle, Piper is also heartworm positive. We don’t have all the details of how Piper and her puppies got this way, but all we know is that it ends now. This little family is at our vet’s office where they are safe and warm, bellies full.
Piper is about 5 years old. Her puppies are old enough to wean and eat solid food, so we’re doing that as soon as possible to reduce the extra strain on her body. Once her milk has dried up and she’s closer to a healthy weight, we can spay her and begin heartworm treatment. It will take some time to get her where she needs to be, but with time we know that she’ll be just as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside. We’ll update everyone when Piper is officially available for adoption.
As for Piper’s babies, there are four girls, who we’ve named Paisley, Pippa, Paloma, and Pearl. One of the little ones has brindle coloring, so it is unclear what they might be mixed with, and we’re unsure what their dad looked like. No matter what they are, one thing is clear: they’re super cute! Piper was an amazing momma and kept her babies in good condition despite it all. They are doing well with weaning and have been eating well. The puppies will receive their first vaccines in the coming week and will be available for adoption in three weeks when they are 8 weeks old. We’ll update with individual photos/introductions soon!
We really really need some help with the cost of this little family’s care. Momma Piper will be receiving special care in order to get her body condition back where it needs to be, and heartworm treatment isn’t cheap. Deworming and vaccines for the puppies all adds up too!
