Happy Gotcha Day Coal!

MEET COAL!! This fabulous guy is about 3-4 years old. He was part of a group of dogs we rescued from a rural shelter this past summer. Sadly, Coal was a stray that no one came to reclaim. He is a super sweet boy who is pretty laid back. He walks well on the leash and is well mannered. Coal was heartworm positive when we first got him, but he has now completed treatment. We have learned a lot about Coal since he has been in his foster home. Read through the foster updates below for more info about Coal!

Foster Update 11/27/2017: Coal has been around our niece and nephews some as well as an 8 year old in the neighborhood and he has been just fine with all. He’s still on the skittish side in general so he kind of just shies away from them, just like he would with an adult when he meets them.  It still takes a little time for him warm up to new people but he has come so incredibly far. He is extremely gentle and does not jump up on people so I wouldn’t worry about him knocking a child over.  He has a pretty powerful tail wag that isn’t the most pleasant feeling when it hits you but can’t fault him for that.  We’ve never had an issue with him being truly aggressive whatsoever.  However, I will say he has areally loud bark and isn’t afraid to use it. If he sees a neighbor while we are out on our walks, he will bark in their direction butdoes not try to go towards them. If they were to come over to us to say hi, he shies away so he’s really just “all talk” in our opinion. I can see where his bark would be intimidating or scary if I didn’t know what a sweetheart he actually is. When guests visit, he will immediately run to the foyer area when they knock (but not all the way to the front door) and bark. Once he realizes the guests are welcome in our home and that there’s no need to bark, he stops.  Our dog does the same thing, so I feel like he’s kind of just following her lead on that.  We are working on the barking but haven’t found a way to rid him of the habit yet. Honestly, these are the only “negatives” we can say about him. He is such a sweetheart and we really can’t believe someone hasn’t scooped him up yet.  He’s kind of the best of both worlds because he’s calm and mellow inside but is playful at all the appropriate times, if that makes sense.  Let us know if they have anyother questions or if we can do anything else to help.

Foster Update 11/9/2017: Coal is doing so well!  For starters, he had his *final* heartworm treatment last week – YAY! 🙂  That being said, in just a few short weeks he’ll be able to run around without restriction and get back to being just a regular ol’ pup.  Fall has finally arrived and Coal is enjoying going for walks and playing at the dog park in this cooler weather.  With Thanksgiving right around the corner, he is sporting a new festive bandana.  Check out what a handsome little turkey he is in these pics!  We are all keeping our fingers (and paws) crossed that Coal will be fortunate enough to spend the holiday with his new forever family.  So if you’ve got an open seat at your Thanksgiving table, this sweet boy would be so grateful to have the opportunity to occupy it!  Unfortunately Coal is unable to attend the adoption event this Saturday, but he wants everyone to know that he will gladly schedule time to meet up another day if you think he might be the one for you.

Foster Update 10/10/2017: Coal is a total sweetheart and continues to gain confidence every day.  He had his first heartworm treatment last week, which he handled like a champ.  He does need to stay relatively calm until his treatment is complete, but so far that hasn’t been too difficult since he’s a pretty easy going guy anyway.  The vet was pleased with his overall health and thought he maybe looked a little thicker, although the scale didn’t necessarily reflect that.  We are taking her advice and increasing his food a bit more to hopefully pack on a few more pounds so he’ll be even more handsome than he already is.  He keeps us entertained with his goofy personality and the way he follows his foster sister around wherever she goes.  One of his favorite things to do is play tug with her even though she rarely lets him win 😉  He has such good manners and is completely house trained now.  This gentleman is a real catch and he’s waiting patiently to meet you!  Won’t you give him a chance to steal your heart?

Foster Update 09/01/2017: Just wanted to send an update on Coal and share some recent pictures.
He is such a sweet boy and it is obvious that he is very happy to finally be in a real home.  He is understandably still pretty timid but has honestly come a long way in just the 2 weeks that he’s been with us.  He gets along well with our dog and other dogs that he has met in the neighborhood but we’ve noticed he’s not especially fond of the ones that want to get up in his face, even if they are just trying to get him to play.  We think he would be fine in a home with other dogs as long as they are on the more mellow side, basically dogs like him.

He has a go with the flow attitude and just wants to be wherever you are.  He rides very well in the car and enjoys going for walks at the park.  He isn’t a huge fan of sleeping in a crate so we’ve been letting him sleep on his own bed in our room at night and haven’t had an issue.  Today we discovered that thunderstorms make him uneasy, so we made our own version of a “thunder shirt” (just a regular t-shirt), which actually seemed to help.  He is housetrained for the most part, aside from the occasional accident, but we are working on that.  He is well mannered otherwise and doesn’t get on the furniture unless we call him up.  He is a handsome boy and we think he might have some Pointer or maybe a little Weimaraner in him.  While he’s still on the skinny side at the moment, he has a very healthy appetite so hopefully he’ll put on more weight soon.

Unfortunately, our new dogs in their transport came down with kennel cough and will have to spend a few days recovering at our vet’s office. As you may know, we are a not for profit rescue and ran by volunteers. If you would like to make a donation to help cover the costs for their treatment will be so very much appreciated!
